Cassius Clay, or Muhammad Ali as he is better known, stepped into the boxing ring when he was a mere 12 years old. He remained there for the next 27 years. He had 108 amateur bouts, including 6 Kentucky Golden Gloves championships, 2 National Golden Gloves championships, 2 National AAU titles, and an Olympic Gold Medal in Rome, all a few months after his 18th birthday. He was the most personable athlete in the history of boxing, and possibly in any sport, but he was also the most antagonistic. Known as "The Louiseville Lip," he would taunt his opponents mercilessly, and more often than not, would predict the round that they would fall. He was loud not only inside the ring, but outside as well. His refusal to be drafted to Vietnam resulted in the cancellation of all his boxing licenses, but he returned to the ring, and to the world as a hero, and an inspiration to millions.
