Roberto Clemente played through 18 major league seasons with a hitting style, that, while being unorthodox, was effective enough to produce four N.L. batting titles, a 1996 MVP citation and 15 All Star invitations. He went through his career complaining of aches and pains that never seemed to affect his play, and was a nortorious bad-ball hitter who posted a .317 career average and led the Pittsburgh Pirates to two World Series championships. Clemente never forgot his roots, and was revered in Puerto Rico as a national hero. He died when the small aircraft he was flying in crashed while on its way to Nicaragua where Clemente was part of a team offering to help alleviate the suffering of earthquake victims.
